I have always been passionate about History and Geography since high school. My father was a geography teacher, and three out of the four kids in my family have Geography degrees. I also studied Political Science at university, specialising in International Relations. I never wanted to be a teacher despite seeing my parents enjoy it and take advantage of teaching opportunities overseas. But after university, I travelled to China and taught ESOL. It was there that I realised that I enjoyed being in a classroom of young people, so I returned to New Zealand to complete my Diploma of Teaching.
I have taught at KVC in two phases. I was initially employed from 2006-2012. I resigned from KVC when I was about to give birth to my second child. While raising my family, I retrained as a yoga teacher and then worked casually as a reliever for approximately three years. I really enjoyed relieving here and at a couple of other Dunedin high schools, but KVC is the place I feel the strongest connection. In 2021, I returned to KVC as a part-time member of the Social Sciences and English departments.
One of my guiding values in education is that I am here to hold a space for young people. I appreciate that many people have not been dealt the kind of hand I have in terms of growing up in a comfortable and supportive home. A large part of our role as teachers is pastoral care, modelling acceptable language, and being polite even when we are dealing with our own issues.
