Information about Petanque

Petanque is run by Dunedin City Petanque Club situated at 81 Eglinton Road Mornington. It is held on Tuesdays for yrs 7-13 from 3.30pm to 5.30pm. Beginners welcome.

 8 week competition - February to April 2026

WHAT IS PETANQUE? It is a fun target sport, where you try to get as close as possible to a small wooden target, by throwing a steel boule while standing inside a circle.  It is played in over 160 countries, with a global participation estimate of tens of millions.  It is easy to play but also challenging and social or competitive whatever you prefer. 

 WHY PLAY PETANQUE?

·       Its rules are simple, inexpensive, only requirement is wearing closed in shoes.

·       It’s social, fun and a great challenge.

·       It’s suitable for players with a range of abilities; you don't have to be fast, fit or strong.

·       Individuals can choose to play purely for social fun or can go on to achieve Regional, National and even international recognition if they put the time and energy into the sport.  Many youth players who started in this competition have gone on to represent New Zealand.

Dates:              Every ‘fine’ Wednesday for 8 weeks - Starts on 11th February till 1st April.

Where:            Dunedin City Petanque, 81 Eglinton Road, Dunedin

Time:               3.30pm registration and coaching, 1st game 4.00pm. Finishes at 5.30pm

Who/What:   Open to everyone – from 10 years (year 5) to 19 years (year 13). If there are enough players, there will be 2 divisions (year 5-9 and year 10-13).  Everyone plays 3 or 4 games every week. There are medals and trophies for the overall winners for the 8 weeks of play.  Tea, coffee, hot chocolate & biscuits provided each week.

Cost:                 $4.00 per person per week or $20 for the 8 weeks.

 •          No experience required; full instruction provided prior to play.

·              No partner required, register as individuals.

•          All equipment supplied; however fully closed in shoes must be worn.

•          Free coaching provided

•          Sessions fully supervised by experience adults.

·         There are multiple opportunities to carry on with the sport if you enjoy your time playing in this mini competition.
