Kaikorai Valley College Mathematics department is a very high achieving students gaining many Excellence endorsements every year.
We allow students to fully meet their mathematical potential if they require extension, while also supporting students who need extra help with a numeracy focus in years 9, 10 and 11.
We have a high performing motivated teaching staff with many years of teaching experience between us. .we offer students opportunities to enter various mathematics competitions, such as the Australian Mathematics Competition, University of Otago Junior Mathematics Competition and the Eton Press Senior Mathematics Competition.
In Years 9 and 10 we endeavour to stream to fully support our learners with a more advanced class and a class tailored to support and develop mathematical confidence.
The Mathematics department at Kaikorai Valley College is proud to be part of the Urban Farm developments and uses the farm to promote mathematical understanding.
Albert Einstein [1879-1955] stated that:
“as far as the laws of mathematics refer to reality, they are not certain; and as far as they are certain, they do not refer to reality”.
Mathematics is used throughout the world as an essential tool in many fields, including natural science, engineering, medicine and the social sciences.
Applied mathematics, the branch of mathematics concerned with application of mathematical knowledge to other fields, inspires and makes use of new mathematical knowledge to other fields, inspires and makes use of new mathematical discoveries, which have led to the development of entirely new mathematical disciplines, such as statistics and game theory.
Mathematicians also engage in pure mathematics or mathematics for its own sake, without having any application in mind. There is no clear line separating pure and applied mathematics and practical applications for what began as pure mathematics are often discovered.
There are five strands in mathematics:
